Frida Kahlo stands for many things – a sensual artist, from a deeply religious society, a person with great passion herself who managed to evoke poetic expression through paint, and one who especially lived and worked in the world of polarities. She was a Mexican artist known for her unflinching self-portraits.

In this Performance Art event, two contemporary female artists explore some of these as externalised imaginings – such as, the expressive urge, the perfume of life (‘sweetness & stench’), the coloured ‘ground’ versus the blank canvas - encompassing the undercurrents that made up Frida’s life….

Here then, the gallery is overrun by an endless red ribbon walk, temporarily scattered with small paint pots. On Opening night, Gallery goers, are interrupted in their mingling & viewing, and invited to freeze where they are, no matter which side of the central wall they remain…

A brief performance (approx. 10 mins long) manifests quickly, along the red ribbon ‘catwalk’ journey, & where the audience’s experience will need to flip alternately between seeing and hearing, between noticing & feeling.

Sharmila & Gemma’s premise will explore layers of meaning around ‘the artist as transformer, as well as provocateur’.

This post-performance Installation invites contemplation of the concept of presence – yours the viewer’s attendance and attention, as well as that of the artist-producers.

It may bring up questions such as, what actions must the artists have undergone to produce this installation? What might be the layers of meaning that relate to Frida/ to all the artists in this exhibition/ to myself as visitor? Might this detritus from the performance evoke not only Frida the artist –but a suggestive vacancy as well? What aspects of Fida’s story moves us personally - yet do we not also possibly bring our own experiences and meanings into the mix from our own lives, as well?

ELEVEN FACES OF FRIDA KAHLO – is an exhibition of new works by 11 women artists + 1 brave man, from diverse disciplines (including painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, papier mache, performance art, etc)

This collective of visual creators has been brought together especially for the show by the dynamic, and highly creative, Gemma Garcia and comprises (in alphabetical order):

They are all currently based in Brisbane with only two actually born here! The rest hale originally from as far away as Melbourne, Mackay, Toowoomba and Broken Hill, and even further, way beyond our shores, from Valencia (Spain), Coatzacoalcos (Mexico), and even, Cali, (Colombia, South America).

‘Eleven faces of Frida Kahlo” looks to the iconic 20thcentury Mexican self-portrait painter, Frida Kahlo – her life, her passions, her resilience – as inspiration to contemporary artists living across the globe in an essentially prosperous, urbanized country and in an entirely different century.

This is an exhibition of enormous variety of materials, minds, and perspectives.

The various personal journeys at times embrace themes of myth-making and beauty, the abstracted, the seen and unseen, sexuality or simply, colour; but the common thread that binds them is their shared vision for actively seeking ways through which individual praxes can form part of a greater dialogue – pitching individuality against the all-pervasive, generic.

Here indeed are displayed many nuances of the female condition.

About Gemma Garcia

ARTIST BIO Gemma Garcia was born in Spain in 1971. In 1986 she entered as a student of a Private Art Academy in Valladolid, where she studied classical art. She studied at that Academy of Art for over five years. After living in several cities due to her father’s profession (the whole family were changing homes depending on their father’s jobs) Gemma lived the most time in Castellon - Valencia. Living in Valencia Gemma has always been fascinated by the sculptures created with cardboard during the celebration of the “Fallas” a cultural and traditional celebration in Valencia where “The masters falleros” are part of an important yearly competition of big sculptures. Her interest was also due to the material used in these sculptures (paper). The traditional ones were also created with paper and as a glue they used flour and water mix. Gemma wen to the Cultural Association of Fine Arts of Castellon, and there she meets her “mentor”, the Sculptor Agustin Ahis, specialized in wood and clay. During this time Gemma began to be interested in combining Art and Therapy. She studied the Diploma of Gestalt Therapy and conducted research about the use of art and therapy with the local department of fire and rescue. She worked for the Spanish government in the Emergency field for 15 years. Her second master’s degree is in Ericksonian Hypnosis from the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Valencia - Spain, in 2006. In 2010 Gemma moved to Australia and founded with his husband Yaro Starak, the Gestalt Art Therapy centre. In 2014 she obtained the Diploma of Visual arts and since then she did not stop learning techniques, creating Arts, and participating in Group exhibitions and competitions. Also, she received several awards for her participation at the Brisbane City Council ARTFORCE Awards. In 2016 she was the winner Best ENERGEX Cabinet 2015. Urban Smart Projects. Her main work is related to “Papier Mache” sculptures, she believes that Art can support climate change, when using recycled materials, and she also loved creating artworks with the print making technique. Gemma is, most of the time, interested in sharing her Spanish culture and Latin culture in Australia. Since 2016, Gemma is the Curator and the Art Groups coordinator of exhibitions related to Spanish /Latin artists. For every project, Gemma invites Australian artists to reflect and create artworks, performances, in response to a famous artist like Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso or Vincent Vangogh, and then create an Art group exhibition. Gemma’s interest is to continue creating art, and her future project will be participating in a “master papier Mache sculptures master class with the Falleros” in Valencia (Spain) and sharing her creations with the Australian public in future exhibitions.
